Serama chickens are the smallest chicken breed in the world and are loved for their bold personalities and upright, proud posture. They’re often kept as pets as much as for eggs.
🌟 Key Characteristics
Size: Extremely small (often 12–20 oz adults)
Posture: Chest pushed forward, tail straight up, wings hanging low
Colors: Many varieties (no single standard color)
Comb: Single comb
Lifespan: 5–7 years (sometimes longer with good care)
💕 Temperament & Personality
Seramas are known for being:
Friendly and curious
Confident despite their tiny size
Good with gentle handling
Often described as “dog-like” in personality
Roosters can be vocal but are usually not aggressive.
🥚 Egg Production
Egg size: Very small (often comparable to quail eggs)
Egg color: Cream to light brown
Laying rate: About 2–4 eggs per week
Broodiness: Hens may go broody occasionally
They are not ideal if egg production is your main goal.
🏡 Housing Needs
Because of their size, Seramas need special considerations:
Lower roosts (they can’t jump high)
Small-gauge hardware cloth to keep predators out
Draft-free coop (they are sensitive to cold)
Can be kept indoors or in warm climates year-round
Many owners keep them as indoor/outdoor pets.
🌡 Climate Sensitivity
Seramas originate from a warm climate and:
Do poorly in cold weather
May need heat support in winter (depending on location)
Should be kept dry at all times
They tolerate heat much better than cold.
🍽 Feeding
Chick starter (20–22% protein) for babies
All-flock or layer feed for adults
Feed should be finely ground due to their small beaks
Fresh water in shallow containers
Avoid treats that are too large for them to eat safely.
🐥 Breeding & Care Notes
Eggs are fragile due to size
Hens can hatch and raise chicks but need calm, protected spaces
Chicks are tiny and need very secure brooders
Handle gently—they’re delicate
